The Labrador Retriever history

The Labrador breed dates back to at least the 1830s, when St. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland, were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorsetshire. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever.

Labrador Retriever coat colors

There are only three Labrador Retriever coat colors. Yellow, Black and Chocolate.

Yellows can range from light cream to fox-red, blacks are completely black and chocolates can range from light to dark chocolate.

Be careful of advertised "white" or "red" special coat colors. They are most likely bred for coat color alone, with no priority to health, temperament and true breed type standards.
Especailly beware of supposed rare "silver", "charcoal", "champange" Labradors.

Learn about the The D locus and the dilute gene dd that causes the silver coat color mutation.
Here is a great link with information regarding silver labradors, from the
Labrador Retriever Club, Inc.,
which is the single organization officially recognized by the American Kennel Club as the national parent club of the Labrador Retriever.
